Debuting their first CD entitled “Local Girls”, two University of Hawaii students are stepping into the world of Hawaii’s contemporary music community as Keahiwai. Keahiwai, which roughly translates to “Fire and “Water”, represents the personalities and music styles of Lei Melket and Mailani Makainai respectively.

As ukulele comrades while attending Maryknoll School, Lei and Mailani casually performed as a duo for special school events and family parties. Their smooth grooves and comforting voices were well received by audiences of all ages. Original compositions, which 8 are featured on “Local Girls” CD, were always included in their repertoire and favorites amongst regular fans. Their original compositions, true to the heart and captivating, were mainly generated from life experiences and inspirations.

Keahiwai’s “Local Girls” comprises of a variety of music styles and melodies that will appeal to the young and old. Although relatively new to Hawaii’s music scene, Keahiwai has the chemistry to grow for years to come.
