Debuting
their first CD entitled “Local Girls”, two University
of Hawaii students are stepping into the world of Hawaii’s
contemporary music community as Keahiwai. Keahiwai, which roughly
translates to “Fire and “Water”, represents the
personalities and music styles of Lei Melket and Mailani Makainai
respectively.
As ukulele comrades
while attending Maryknoll School, Lei and Mailani casually performed
as a duo for special school events and family parties. Their smooth
grooves and comforting voices were well received by audiences of
all ages. Original compositions, which 8 are featured on “Local
Girls” CD, were always included in their repertoire and favorites
amongst regular fans. Their original compositions, true to the heart
and captivating, were mainly generated from life experiences and
inspirations.
Keahiwai’s “Local
Girls” comprises of a variety of music styles and melodies
that will appeal to the young and old. Although relatively new to
Hawaii’s music scene, Keahiwai has the chemistry to grow for
years to come.
